Congatulate yourself when you reach one of your first short term goals then get back down to the gym, and keep training. The short phase goals will keep you afire and ready to train harder than have done before.
Working your way back from the end goal is a way to set goals. If lets say in the next year your long term goal is to gain 50 pounds of muscle. Your short term aim then can be to gain 5 pounds a month.

Buy a good book , scroll the internet or join a reputable muscle building program. As knowledge is power, becoming more knowledgeable what you will have to do.
Weight Training Tips #4: Correct Technique.
Because it’s no fun tearing a muscle or crunching cartilage, correct method is very important. The main advantage to proper technique is more muscle gain other than safety. To have the most benefit to your muscle growth carry out an exercise the correct way and that’s what we are after, right?
If too much weight makes you lose technique, drop the weight a little until you can manage it. Just to try to out lift your buddy, or yourself but never compromise your form.
Weight Training Tips #5:Development.
To this maxim, Inch-by-inch life is a sinch, something to think about.Take it on board and store this statement into your mind set. Just take one step at a time, and once you have the end result in mind it won’t seem as daunting. Which aim sounds more accessible? 5 pounds in the next four weeks? or trying to build 50 pounds by the end of the year? the 4 weeks option is what appears to be a little easier, hence inch by inch life is sinch.

These are some great tips. I personally struggle with record keeping. What is the best way to keep track of your progress? I have found great software programs for the diet/nutrition but they are to general when it comes to my training.
Richard, the best way is just to record everything in paper. A sheet of paper is easy to carry to the gym and you can compile them later for easy consulting. good luck
