			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you are interested in becoming certified as a personal trainer, you have many options from which to choose. There are many high quality certification programs available; in fact, there are so many that it becomes challenging to select just one! </p>
<p>To help you narrow down your choices, we have a list of some of the options in personal training certification available. By opening the field to a wide range of choices, you should be able to find the best fit in a personal training certification program for your needs. </p>
<p><strong>Accredited Programs</strong></p>
<p>Many programs are specifically geared toward certifying students as personal trainers by preparing them for a certification exam at the end of the program. If you choose a certification program, look for organizations that have been accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). </p>
<p>Some of the best known programs include American Council for Exercise (ACE), National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). These programs usually allow you to obtain your certification within a matter of months, which can be used to work at some of the top gyms and fitness centers in the country.<br />
<strong><br />
Online Programs</strong></p>
<p>For individuals who do not have a certification program in their area, online options are also available. Many of the accredited organizations also allow students to prepare for the exams at home, using online material that you order through the organization. You might also find study helps like flashcards and sample examinations available through the organization&#8217;s website. </p>
<p>However, most of these organizations do require that the exam is taken at a secure facility, so you may need to travel some distance to reach an exam center. Most of the accredited organizations have exam centers in all the major cities in the United States, which means travel should be relatively limited. </p>
<p><strong>Community Colleges</strong></p>
<p>Many community colleges offer personal training certification, as well as associate&#8217;s degrees in related fields of study. Many of these college programs take between 30 and 40 hours to complete and include an NCCA-accredited exam for certification at the end of the program. </p>
<p>Coursework usually incorporates textbook study, lecture and practical experience to provide a well-rounded training program. Some also offer internships at local fitness centers and may even provide placement services after graduation.<br />
<strong><br />
Four-Year Degrees</strong></p>
<p>While a four-year degree isn&#8217;t necessary for many personal training jobs, some accredited certification programs require a degree before students can enroll in the program. A bachelor&#8217;s degree in a related field like sports medicine or kinesiology will also better equip you to work at some of the best facilities in the country. The level of experience you receive through a university will also help you break into business for yourself if you decide to become an independent contractor in the fitness industry.</p>
<p>If you are preparing for a career in personal training, you have many options available. Whether you choose an accredited certification program, a two-year college or a four-year university, the right training will help you launch a successful career in the fitness industry.</p>

Once you have your certification from a reputable organization, you can begin thinking about the type of job you would like to have. Personal trainers work in a wide range of venues, allowing you plenty of flexibility when planning your career path. We have just a sampling of the many options available to those with personal training certification.</p>
<p><strong>Health Clubs and Gyms</strong></p>
<p>Many personal trainers head to the local health clubs and gyms after receiving certification. Some of the more prestigious centers may pay personal trainers a high hourly rate to work with their clients. At health clubs, personal trainers have access to all of the top-rated equipment, allowing them to design programs customized to each client&#8217;s individual needs. They may or may not be able to set their own hours or choose their own clients, depending on the policies set by the gym or fitness center who employs them.  </p>
<p><strong>Corporate Settings</strong></p>
<p>Some companies hire personal trainers to work with their staff to help them maintain an optimal level of fitness and health. These personal trainers are typically employees or contractors of the company, working within the corporate fitness facility or a nearby gym. </p>
<p>Corporate personal trainers may conduct group or individual sessions, and they will work with individuals to lose weight, develop a good exercise habit and even train for upcoming events. These trainers probably work within the company&#8217;s schedule, seeing individuals before and after work or on their lunch hours. </p>
<p><strong>Cruise Ships and Resorts</strong></p>
<p>Many resorts and cruise ships also have personal trainers on staff to help guests keep up with their workout programs while they are on vacation. These trainers work within the facilities of the ship or resort, which often include some of the best equipment in the industry. </p>
<p>Some personal trainers teach classes and work with individual guests one-on-one to help them use the equipment and work toward fitness goals. Personal trainers in these venues work on the schedule set by the resort or cruise ship, and they may meet with individual clients outside of those hours as well. </p>
<p><strong>Independent Contractors</strong></p>
<p>Some personal trainers choose to work as independent contractors, helping clients in their homes or at the local fitness center. Some trainers even create their own fitness facility at home and bring clients to them for their workout sessions. While independent contractors may make slightly more than trainers who work in clubs or other venues, they also tend to spend more time on the road traveling to clients. They typically work evenings and weekends, when their clients are off from their jobs. </p>
<p>Independent contractors do have more flexibility with their schedules, but they still must work around the most convenient times for their clients if they want to build a robust business of their own. </p>
<p>Personal training certification opens the door to a wide range of opportunities. Whether you want to spend your days in the local gym or seeing the world from the deck of a cruise ship, you can find a personal training job that is perfect for you. </p>

<p>As for the mustache and the important message, check out this video of yesterday&#8217;s 4th Annual <a href="http://www.cresseyperformance.com" target="_blank"><strong>Cressey Performance</strong></a> Thanksgiving Day Lift, where we had about 30 people in attendance.  The horseshoe &#8216;stache (minus the soul patch) makes an appearance at the 26-second mark.</p>

<p>At risk of sounding overconfident, things have gone well for us at Cressey Performance since we opened our doors in 2007.  We&#8217;ve had double digit percentage growth in each of the past three years and the job seems to get more and more fun each and every day.  In the next two months, we&#8217;ll expand into an additional 1,000 square-feet.  I talked a lot about how we&#8217;ve attacked things to get to where we are in a previous blog post, <a href="http://ericcressey.com/three-years-of-cressey-performance" target="_blank"><strong>Three Years of Cressey Performance: The Right Reasons and the Right Way</strong></a>.</p>
<p>One thing I&#8217;m not sure I&#8217;ve highlighted in my writing enough, though, is how important the camaraderie we have among our clientele is.  &#8220;Creating camaraderie&#8221; was never a bulletpointed objective in our business plan, but in hindsight, it was the single-most important factor in our gym not only &#8220;making it,&#8221; but thriving in an economy where loads of other gyms were closing their doors just about every day.</p>
<p>Each year, the Thanksgiving Day lift reminds me of that, as for me, Thanksgiving is all about <em>family.</em> In other words, if you&#8217;re going to spend a few hours with people on Thanksgiving morning (and get up ultra-early to do so on the morning after what is arguably the biggest partying night of the year), then you better enjoy the company of those people and see them as part of your extended family.  We had high school athletes, college athletes, professional athletes, weekend warriors, Moms and Dads, and former interns in to get after it from 7:30AM to 9:30AM &#8211; and it really meant a lot to our staff.  Sure, a lot of them were probably just there to see (and feel&#8230;and be photographed with) my mustache, but you get the point.</p>

<p>How do you create camaraderie among your clients?</p>
<ul>
<li> You hire the right people, give them plenty of autonomy, and make sure their jobs are as fun and rewarding as possible so that they&#8217;ll always be in the right mood to create and nurture friendships; there simply can&#8217;t be bad days.  I heard from a commercial gym trainer the other day that his facility had 68% employee turnover the previous year; how do the members even know the staff &#8211; let alone become their friends &#8211; when they&#8217;re gone within a month or two?</li>
<li>You treat everyone as individuals, even if they&#8217;re in a semi-private or bootcamp-style training set-up.  This means you individualize with your programming and find time to interact with everyone, monitor their progress, ask about their families, or just shoot the breeze about who the Red Sox should sign this off-season.</li>
<li>You put results first and revenues second (some of the business coaches out there will hate me for this one).</li>
<li>You introduce clients to other clients and help <a href="http://ericcressey.com/expanding-clients%E2%80%99-social-networks-an-overlooked-role-of-the-fitness-professional" target="_blank"><strong>expand their social networks</strong></a>.</li>
<li>You organize client events &#8211; whether it&#8217;s a Thanksgiving morning lift, trip to a baseball playoff game or a boxing match, Halloween party, or a seminar for parents on how to keep young pitchers healthy.  And they don&#8217;t even have to be huge gatherings; my family has had two of our pro baseball players with us at Thanksgiving each of the past two years, for instance.</li>
</ul>
<p>The possibilities are endless in this regard, and the appropriate &#8220;strategies&#8221; (if you can even call &#8220;caring&#8221; a strategy) are going to be unique to each facility, but the end goal should always be the same: camaraderie.  If you&#8217;re in the fitness industry and not working to create it both intentionally and unintentionally, you&#8217;re missing out on an important component of being successful.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I came across the abstract for this interesting Australian study the other day: <strong><a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20634610" target="_blank">Actual versus perceived lifting ability in healthy young men (18-25 years)</a></strong>.</p>
<p>Basically, researchers compared what men under the age of 25 SAID they could lift with what they actually COULD lift when tested.  According to the researchers, &#8220;One third of subjects were able to accurately self-report their lifting performance, approximately one-third underestimated, and the remaining third overestimated their lifting ability.&#8221;</p>
<p>So, out of every three people, we have one person who is pretty even-keeled and honest with himself about his physical abilities.</p>
<p>And, we have another who is either a) intimidated and doesn&#8217;t think he can do it or b) lazy and unwilling to &#8220;do it.&#8221;</p>
<p>Finally,we have everyone&#8217;s favorite: the tough guy who talks a big game.  These are the guys who sit behind their keyboards claiming to squat 500 pounds &#8211; or bench 400, or throw 95mph fastballs.  However, nobody every witnesses it.  They have big balls on the internet.</p>

<p>How many times have you walked into a commercial gym and seen a 400-pound bench press?  I think I&#8217;ve seen it once &#8211; and the guy weighed about 330 pounds.</p>
<p>How about a legitimate 600-pound squat?  I&#8217;ve never seen it in a commercial gym, only a few times without a squat-suit in hardcore powerlifting gyms, and only twice college weight rooms in my life.</p>
<p>And, I&#8217;m certainly not seeing 95mph fastballs at every high school baseball game.  In fact, as I recall reading last year, there are only about eight pitchers in all of Major League Baseball who have consistent 95+mph fastballs.  Maybe the rest of the pros need to spend more time on the internet to get better?</p>
<p>However, go on to any internet forum &#8211; whether it&#8217;s for lifting or pitching &#8211; and you&#8217;ll come across all this hidden talent that is yearning to be discovered.  Sorry, folks, but you&#8217;re the 1/3 of people I referenced above.  Put up or shut up.  I&#8217;d actually say that this 33% figure also applies to baseball fathers; about one in three is CONVINCED that his kid is much better than Junior really is.</p>
<p>Finally, as an interesting little aside, ever wonder why nobody ever lies about their deadlift numbers?</p>

<p>I have to assume that it&#8217;s because the deadlift is a pretty &#8220;yes or no&#8221; exercise.  You either can or can&#8217;t pick something heavy up off the floor.  It&#8217;s not like a squat or bench press, where you can shorten the range of motion and instantly improve your numbers.</p>
