			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I came across the abstract for this interesting Australian study the other day: <strong><a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20634610" target="_blank">Actual versus perceived lifting ability in healthy young men (18-25 years)</a></strong>.</p>
<p>Basically, researchers compared what men under the age of 25 SAID they could lift with what they actually COULD lift when tested.  According to the researchers, &#8220;One third of subjects were able to accurately self-report their lifting performance, approximately one-third underestimated, and the remaining third overestimated their lifting ability.&#8221;</p>
<p>So, out of every three people, we have one person who is pretty even-keeled and honest with himself about his physical abilities.</p>
<p>And, we have another who is either a) intimidated and doesn&#8217;t think he can do it or b) lazy and unwilling to &#8220;do it.&#8221;</p>
<p>Finally,we have everyone&#8217;s favorite: the tough guy who talks a big game.  These are the guys who sit behind their keyboards claiming to squat 500 pounds &#8211; or bench 400, or throw 95mph fastballs.  However, nobody every witnesses it.  They have big balls on the internet.</p>

<p>How many times have you walked into a commercial gym and seen a 400-pound bench press?  I think I&#8217;ve seen it once &#8211; and the guy weighed about 330 pounds.</p>
<p>How about a legitimate 600-pound squat?  I&#8217;ve never seen it in a commercial gym, only a few times without a squat-suit in hardcore powerlifting gyms, and only twice college weight rooms in my life.</p>
<p>And, I&#8217;m certainly not seeing 95mph fastballs at every high school baseball game.  In fact, as I recall reading last year, there are only about eight pitchers in all of Major League Baseball who have consistent 95+mph fastballs.  Maybe the rest of the pros need to spend more time on the internet to get better?</p>
<p>However, go on to any internet forum &#8211; whether it&#8217;s for lifting or pitching &#8211; and you&#8217;ll come across all this hidden talent that is yearning to be discovered.  Sorry, folks, but you&#8217;re the 1/3 of people I referenced above.  Put up or shut up.  I&#8217;d actually say that this 33% figure also applies to baseball fathers; about one in three is CONVINCED that his kid is much better than Junior really is.</p>
<p>Finally, as an interesting little aside, ever wonder why nobody ever lies about their deadlift numbers?</p>
</p>
<p>I have to assume that it&#8217;s because the deadlift is a pretty &#8220;yes or no&#8221; exercise.  You either can or can&#8217;t pick something heavy up off the floor.  It&#8217;s not like a squat or bench press, where you can shorten the range of motion and instantly improve your numbers.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>All right, so you want to get strong and go to the gym to work. You may think that pumping weights is all you have to do, but it is not that simple.</p>
<p>It is nutrition that plays in big role when it comes to recovery and growth. You need to change your diet according to the increase or decrease of your muscle mass. If you want to gain muscle you need to eat more. If you loose muscle you need to eat less. How can you observe what is occurring inside your body?</p>
<p>The first is to monitor your weight to see if your goal to put muscle on is causing an increase in bodyweight. If the scales show that weight are staying the same or going down then its time to look at the diet and eat more. If the weight is going up because your stomach is getting bigger then you are eating too much. But be cautious, you can expect to put some bodyfat on when trying to put muscle on, but you want to monitor that the dreaded fat isn&#8217;t going on to much.</p>
<p>Using body fat calipers is a great technique to assess whether muscle or fat is increasing. You can use them every other week. If muscle seems to be going down according to your calipers, that is the evidence that you are not eating enough good nutrition. If the calipers reflect that the percent of bodyfat is increasing then you will have to consume less.</p>
<p>Decent gyms should offer a set of calipers, which should give you true readings as to the results as long as you ensure the same person takes measurements each time. Using them and finding the millimeters and your bodyweight you can use the chart and find the percentage bodyfat you have.</p>
<p>In order to figure out what the amount of your body fat you have, you need to take your body weight, in pounds, multiply it by your body fat percentage. This formula will tell you what your total body fat is. Subtracting this amount from total weight will estimate your free fat mass. This total includes not just muscle but all structure in the body, but it is a good estimate for our purposes.</p>
<p>The two figures you have just worked out, the total bodyfat and fat free mass, should be written down and kept. Then next time you have the measurements done you will see if the bodyfat percentage has gone up. You will find that if your food intake is right then with your exercise and nutrition the fat free mass will go up and the total bodyfat will go down. But if your not eating enough then you will find that the fat free mass, muscle, is going down and the bodyfat will go up.</p>

<p>There are as many different reasons for getting involved as there are bodybuilders. Some would like compete on the professional level. Some would to simply lose a few pounds and bulk up. Others would like to attract members of the opposite sex, or simply enjoy the massive boost in self esteem that inevitably follows bodybuilding habit.</p>
<p>No matter what your own personal reasons. are, I&#8217;d like to give you a couple good ideas on how to get started. Once you&#8217;ve got a decent plan laid, your success will become much more automatic, and you&#8217;ll get all the benefits that you want much more quickly.</p>
<p>First and foremost, you&#8217;ll need to create a specific, measurable goal. This means something that you can see, measure and record. Strength, how much you can press, size, or percentage of body fat are all examples of things you can measure. Pick a time three or six months in the future and choose a specific goal to achieve by that time.</p>
<p>Now you&#8217;ve got our target in your sites, it&#8217;s time to figure out a way to get there. Just work backwards from your goal, and decide what it will take to get to where you want to go. How much exercise per day, how many grams of protein, how much sleep per night, etc. The cool thing about this is that you can easily adjust, as you measure your progress and extrapolate out to your target.</p>

<p>For instance, you can perform the military press, the power clean, the squat, the bench press and the dead lift while using a barbell. There are however, many bodybuilding exercises you can do without using a barbell, which opens more doors of successful training.</p>
<p>There are as many reasons to do bodybuilding exercises without barbells as there are people who do them. Some may want to work out at home yet have no access to a barbell.</p>
<p>Or perhaps you travel a lot, and have to use hotel gyms and the like that have a few machines and some free weights but no barbell. All of the sudden when you&#8217;re used to having barbells around and then you don&#8217;t, you realize you have been taking them for granted for all this time.</p>
<p>Alternatively, you may be looking for a way to inject some fresh life into a boring routine, or to target different sides of your body individually to help balance out weak spots and prevent injuries. Regardless of the reason, all bodybuilding exercises can be changed to be performed without the traditional barbell.</p>
<p>Starting with some simple switches, you can take the barbell out of many exercises and replace it with two dumbbells without having to change the movement itself much at all.</p>
<p>Using two dumbbells while pressing at the same time or alternating the fashion you can perform the bench press. You can perform the goblet squat by holding one dumbbell in front of your chest while during squats and you can exercise with them by holding one on either side of your body using your arms straight.</p>
<p>You can use dumbbells to perform shoulder presses or even dead lifts as you use two dumbbells in front of your feet. You do not have to include the use in your regular bodybuilding workouts for any reason if you so choose.</p>
<p>The only bodybuilding exercise mentioned above that cannot be switched directly to dumbbells is the power clean exercise. However, there are so many other good bodybuilding exercises you can do that give you good results. You may want to exercise with one arm bent over rows for the middle back. While holding dumbbells at the side of the body you can do shrugs or even consider incorporating chin-ups and push-ups to exercise your back.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t be afraid that if you lose access to a barbell you lose your bodybuilding exercises as well. Almost every great barbell exercise can be performed utilizing dumbbells, or can be replaced with other effective bodybuilding moves and routines.
