Mike Reinold polled some of the best in the world of manual therapy, physical therapy, and strength and conditioning (plus a schmuck named &#8220;Cressey&#8221;) to ask for their best career advice for students and young professionals in our fields.  <a href="http://www.mikereinold.com/2010/08/best-career-advice-for-students-and.html" target="_blank"><strong>Here is the post</strong></a> that emerged; it came out really well &#8211; and actually serves as an awesome adjunct to <a href="http://ericcressey.com/want-to-be-a-personal-trainer-or-strength-coach-start-here" target="_blank"><strong>yesterday&#8217;s advice on starting out in the fitness industry</strong></a>.</p>
<p>2. <p>Gray&#8217;s been talking about this book (and working on it) for years now, and there is no doubt in my mind that he won&#8217;t disappoint. I&#8217;m really looking forward to it.</p>
<p>3. Here&#8217;s a link to an interview with Cressey Performance and Lincoln-Sudbury athlete Adam Ravenelle, who is committed to play baseball at Vanderbilt:</p>

<p>The thing I like the most about this interview is the fact that Adam emphasized the importance of in-season training and how valuable it is to young pitchers.  You&#8217;d be amazed at how many guys work their butts off in the off-season and show up to the start of the season strong&#8230;only to skip their lifting and flexibility work for the next 6-8 months.  It&#8217;s one step forward, and one step back &#8211; but not for guys like Adam who &#8220;get it.&#8221;  &#8220;Rav&#8221; has gained over 50 pounds with us since 2007 while going from the high 70s to low 90mph range &#8211; and having an open-minded and dedicated attitude toward in-season training has been a big part of it.</p>
<p>3. Speaking of throwing the baseball faster, <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20072054" target="_blank"><strong>Haag et al.</strong></a> found that pre-throwing static stretching did not negatively affect baseball pitching velocity.  This is pretty significant, as many modern coaches generally encourage players to universally avoid static stretching right before training and competition for fear of reductions in power output (that research horse has been beaten to death).</p>
<p>Personally, though, I&#8217;ve always felt that it was really valuable to stretch the throwing shoulder in the majority of our pitchers before they threw (the exceptions being the ones with crazy laxity).  Typically, we stretch guys (or encourage them to stretch themselves) into shoulder internal rotation and flexion.  It&#8217;s safe to assume that getting range in their directions is going to not only minimize the effect of the peel-back mechanism for SLAP lesions at lay-back, but also enable them to have a longer, smoother deceleration arc.</p>

<p>While more research is definitely warranted, my hunch is that static stretching is less &#8220;inhibitory&#8221; in the upper body than the lower body because the upper body deals with predominantly open-chain motion, and is therefore more heavily reliant on mobility than stability.</p>

<p>Who says you need to work out at a gym to become a bodybuilder? You can work out and build muscle in your own home gym if you want to! Of course, you&#8217;ll find there are both advantages and disadvantages to whichever way you go-whether you choose to work out at home or at a gym-but you need to choose what works best for you.</p>
<p>Usually if you go to a gym, you&#8217;ll have access to lots of different equipment and there will be professionals there who can provide you with good training advice. It may also be safer because other people are around. On the other hand, it can get annoying waiting for equipment you want to use or listening to other users at the gym just sitting around gossiping.</p>
<p>If you work out at home, you don&#8217;t have to share equipment or visit with other gym users you don&#8217;t want to talk to. You don&#8217;t have to travel or park, there are no fees, and you can listen to whatever you want during your workout. In addition, you can take your shirt off and make all the noise you want when you workout without drawing any stares.</p>
<p>The negatives are the initial outlay of money at that is required to purchase the equipment although this will likely last a for ages and can be sold again second hand, you may also incur the wrath of your housemates/partner if you use up too much room.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s no doubt working out in your own home gym is incredibly convenient. Here are some tips for setting up and working out in your home gym.</p>
<p>1) First, make sure you have a large enough space. Often a garage stall, spare room, or basement space is perfect. Be sure that the floor is really solid for safety. For this reason, a garage or basement is often ideal. It would also be a good idea if the area is well ventilated and also dry so your equipment doesn&#8217;t rust or get damaged.</p>
<p>2) Permanently remove any easily damaged objects. Youtube provides and amusing clip of a young guy swinging his barbell into the fish tank which splinters into pieces! Funny of course unless it is your tank. Try to get a permanent set training spot, this will prevent any future mistakes like this. Imagine slipping a barbell into the screen of a plasma tv ot dropping a dumbell on a new laptop, not too much fun.</p>
<p>3) Start out with basic home gym equipment. You should purchase a weight bench, a workout mat, a squat stand, a pull up bar, and a complete set of cast iron dumbbells or barbells. There is a lot of different kinds of equipment out there, so be sure you purchase something that is strong, durable, and long lasting.</p>
<p>4) Set out a decent workout. With the above equipment you can do all the classic muscle building exercises that will build muscle mass. Bench-presses, squats, pull-ups, dead lifts are all must have compound exercises which should be made use of followed by movements such as: barbell curls, upright rows, shrugs, shoulder presses, lunges, lateral raises and bent over rows are also good to use.</p>
<p>5) Keep it safe. Always lift with a spotter-even in your own gym-or take extra safety precautions. For instance, don&#8217;t push for extra reps when you&#8217;re getting tired. And install pins on lifts so that you can set barbells down above chest level and extricate yourself from the machine without crushing yourself.</p>
<p>If you set up a good, safe home gym, you can enjoy the convenience of working out right at home and building muscle without leaving your house.</p>
