<p>To help you narrow down your choices, we have a list of some of the options in personal training certification available. By opening the field to a wide range of choices, you should be able to find the best fit in a personal training certification program for your needs. </p>
<p><strong>Accredited Programs</strong></p>
<p>Many programs are specifically geared toward certifying students as personal trainers by preparing them for a certification exam at the end of the program. If you choose a certification program, look for organizations that have been accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). </p>
<p>Some of the best known programs include American Council for Exercise (ACE), National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). These programs usually allow you to obtain your certification within a matter of months, which can be used to work at some of the top gyms and fitness centers in the country.<br />

Online Programs</strong></p>
<p>For individuals who do not have a certification program in their area, online options are also available. Many of the accredited organizations also allow students to prepare for the exams at home, using online material that you order through the organization. You might also find study helps like flashcards and sample examinations available through the organization&#8217;s website. </p>
<p>However, most of these organizations do require that the exam is taken at a secure facility, so you may need to travel some distance to reach an exam center. Most of the accredited organizations have exam centers in all the major cities in the United States, which means travel should be relatively limited. </p>
<p><strong>Community Colleges</strong></p>
<p>Many community colleges offer personal training certification, as well as associate&#8217;s degrees in related fields of study. Many of these college programs take between 30 and 40 hours to complete and include an NCCA-accredited exam for certification at the end of the program. </p>
<p>Coursework usually incorporates textbook study, lecture and practical experience to provide a well-rounded training program. Some also offer internships at local fitness centers and may even provide placement services after graduation.<br />

Four-Year Degrees</strong></p>
<p>While a four-year degree isn&#8217;t necessary for many personal training jobs, some accredited certification programs require a degree before students can enroll in the program. A bachelor&#8217;s degree in a related field like sports medicine or kinesiology will also better equip you to work at some of the best facilities in the country. The level of experience you receive through a university will also help you break into business for yourself if you decide to become an independent contractor in the fitness industry.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><em><strong>I received this email the other day and thought I&#8217;d share it with those of you who might be on the fence about whether or not <a href="http://showandgotraining.com" target="_blank">Show and Go</a> is a good fit for you.</strong></em></p>
<p>&#8220;I just read your recent blog post in which you mentioned sending <em>Show  and Go</em> testimonials.  Well&#8230;it would be a travesty if I didn&#8217;t give you a shout  out.</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m a personal trainer myself.  And after over 23 years of training  myself and 16 years of training others, to say I grow &#8220;bored&#8221; with conventional  training would be an understatement.  I first trained to augment sport  (football), then I got into powerlifting, and really became addicted to it when  I started bodybuilding.  I competed for eight years in the sport and did very  well.  But&#8230;I outgrew it.  Yes&#8230;I was bored.</p>
<p>&#8220;I, like many others that I train, look to other sources to not only  motivate me in my own training (mentally more than physically), but also to  broaden my horizons as a trainer.  That is what led me to purchase your  Show &amp; Go program.  I have to say, Eric, it is the most comprehensive,  integrated program I have ever used.  From the warm-ups, to the strength  training, to the stretching, to the cardio enhancement&#8230;.my strength,  flexibility, conditioning, and muscularity all improved ten-fold.  And my  bodyfat level went noticeably down without me tweaking my normal diet.  I  even had nagging shoulder and low back pain that inhibited me from doing certain  movements that are now gone.  I was able to deadlift weight I haven&#8217;t been  able to use since my powerlifting days.  Plus, a couple of the core  movements you include are ones I have never seen or done and I loved them!   I now use many of them with my own clients.</p>
<p>&#8220;One last thing to note&#8230;I very rarely get through a 16 week program.   I tend to grow bored and need a different style of training.  That never  happened.  Not only that&#8230;I am starting a second go-round this week of it  with a few of my own personal tweaks to it.     Great product, Eric!  Thank you so much!&#8221;</p>

<p>Along these same lines, the new and improved EricCressey.com will be debuting alongside the launch of <em>Show and Go</em> on the 20th.  It will blow our current set-up out of the water.</p>
<p>2. I&#8217;m going to be relatively brief today, as I&#8217;m headed down to Reebok&#8217;s corporate headquarters in Canton, MA this morning to film some videos on the needs and benefits of strength and conditioning.  I&#8217;ve been down there a few times with some of our pro guys who have endorsement deals when they&#8217;ve shopped in the athlete/employee store, and the entire &#8220;campus&#8221; is pretty darn impressive:</p>

<p>3.  The good folks at <em>Men&#8217;s Health</em> tracked me down for an on-the-fly video tutorial in the lobby at <a href="http://www.performbetter.com?kbid=1186" target="_blank"><strong>Perform Better</strong></a> in Providence back in June, and the video is now available online.  It goes through a few example of thoracic and glenohumeral joint mobility drills we use with our athletes.  A special thanks goes out to CP intern Dave Rak for his help in demonstrating this while I was coaching it.</p>
</p>

<p>4. While this article isn&#8217;t as shocking to those of us in the fitness industry who are appalled at the ridiculously low standards our industry has set for allowing someone to become a personal trainer, I&#8217;m sure it was to the general public who read it.  And, it&#8217;s very well written.  Check it out: <a href="http://www.stltoday.com/business/columns/savvy-consumer/article_5ef56b69-1b51-5f07-8d82-8004aeeabac9.html" target="_blank"><strong>For a Price, Area Firm Certifies the Novice as a Fitness Expert</strong></a>.  Sad, but true.</p>
<p>5. My fiancee and I have a minor league pitcher staying with us for a week while he&#8217;s in town to get evaluated and do some training on a post-rehab stint.  He&#8217;ll head back to his hometown through the end of the year, and then come back to train with us for the nine weeks leading up to spring training.</p>
<p>On Thursday night, we were watching the NFL season opening in my living room &#8211; and I was writing programs on my laptop.  He commented something along the lines of &#8220;Damn, you really do work all day, don&#8217;t you?&#8221;  As I thought about it, I guess I really do.  I&#8217;m usually up at 6AM to make breakfast and see my fiancee before she heads off to work, and then I go right to writing/consulting work up through about 10:15AM, when I head over to the facility, get in my lift, and then coach from 12PM to 6PM or so.  Then, it&#8217;s back home &#8211; often to do more programming, answer emails, and &#8211; right now &#8211; finish up this new project.</p>
<p>He asked me what my ultimate career goal was, and I told him that it essentially amounted to doing my writing in the morning, and then coaching my pro/college guys during the day, and then 1-2 hours of high school guys right after school.  He looks at me and goes, &#8220;That&#8217;s still a nine-hour day, man!&#8221;</p>
<p>As you can probably tell, I&#8217;m not particularly good about shutting things down.  The reason is really simple: I love what I do.  I still need to get better at turning it off more often, though!</p>
<p>6. On a related note, our pro baseball off-season is in full swing now.  I did one evaluation on Wednesday and three on Thursday &#8211; on top of the guys who have already started up (or are working off some of our programs elsewhere in the country before they come up).  It should be a great crew of guys getting after it, and we&#8217;re all really excited about what the next six months has in store for us.  Thus far, the most entertaining moment has been Royals&#8217; prospect Tim Collins&#8217; triumphant return to Cressey Performance &#8211; where he walked around the gym and high-fived all 20 or so clients (even the ones he didn&#8217;t know) who were in the facility at the time.</p>
<p>7. Our boy is back &#8211; and the offer to train for free at CP still stands for him!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s an email I get at least twice a week from a random reader, and it goes something like this:</p>
<p>&#8220;My current job just isn&#8217;t fulfilling, but I really love fitness and want to turn it into a career.  What certification do you recommend?&#8221;</p>
<p>I get these type of inquiries so often that I decided that this bit of writing would be my autoresponse which &#8211; as you&#8217;ll see below &#8211; has a bit of tough love that I think these folks need to hear.</p>
<p>A few months ago, Rachel Cosgrove said that about 80% of those who enter the fitness industry leave it within a year.  I haven&#8217;t seen the statistic myself, but Rachel knows her stuff and meticulously monitors the business side of the fitness industry and I defer to her completely.</p>
<p>Does it say something about the &#8220;status quo&#8221; that our industry probably has more turnover than this position at your local zoo?</p>

<p>Why the crazy turnover within the first year?  Well, for starters, I feel like entering the fitness business is an impulse decision for a lot of folks.  They hate their current jobs so much that they have to go to the opposite end of the spectrum to one of the only things in their lives that makes them happy: exercising.</p>
<p>Two months later, they realize that they&#8217;re working 60-hour weeks on their feet because they have floor hours at their local commercial gym in the middle of the day on top of their only two personal training clients &#8211; who conveniently schedule at 5AM and 6PM.  They&#8217;re rewarded with a whopping $600 check every two weeks, after taxes.  Starting with the 2011 tax plan, it&#8217;ll probably be $200; take notes, kids.</p>
<p>But you&#8217;ve got passion, right?</p>
<p>Wrong.</p>
<p>Passion (and optimism) might get you out of bed for that 5AM client, but only determination, preparation, intrapersonal skills, organization, and a solid understanding of exercise physiology are going to make it possible for you to get through the rest of the day while being happy and making sure that you&#8217;re just a little bit better the next day.</p>
<p>And, I will tell you flat-out that every single trainer I have ever met has had days when exercise was the last thing they wanted to do.  For me, it happened in the fall of 2006 every Tuesday and Thursday night &#8211; when my football guys came in to train with me at 7:30PM after I&#8217;d been training clients since 6:30AM.  Were it not for this kind of energy in my training partners, I probably would have gone home and just gone to bed.</p>
</p>
<p>Obviously, that&#8217;s a worst-case scenario.  However, I&#8217;m never going to discourage someone from pursuing what they feel could be a livelihood where they&#8217;d be happy and helping people.  I would, though, encourage them to adhere to the following steps (in this order):</p>
<p><strong>1. Go observe a few current fitness professionals who are successful in their crafts.</strong> Ask questions and get a feel for whether this is a good fit for you before you jump into the deep-end, quitting your job and investing all sorts of cash in a career change.</p>
<p><strong>2. Wait a year to get a certification. </strong> What?  Huh?  This is supposed to come first, right?  Wrong.  Getting a certification without any background experience makes you a liability, not a professional.  Every penny you spend in that first year should be on books, DVDs, seminars, and travel to go observe other coaches/trainers in action.  And, you should be taking advantage of all the free resources there are for you to get educated online.  Don&#8217;t ignore fitness industry business resources, either; they aren&#8217;t taught with certifications or degrees, but are tremendously important.</p>
<p><strong>3. Get an internship. </strong> This is an extension of #1 &#8211; and it still comes before getting a certification.  You need to log at least three months of 40-hour weeks somewhere learning your craft and paying your dues.  Get a feel for whether you could see yourself doing this long-term.</p>
<p>Obviously, this is a concern because it would require you to quit your job, so you&#8217;d need to save up for this period.  However, you would be amazed at how many interns are hired by facilities after their internship period is over (all our &#8220;hires&#8221; at Cressey Performance have been former interns).  And, most facilities will pay for your certification and CPR/AED training, and some will even give you a continuing education stipends on top of it.</p>
<p><strong>4. Get a certification.</strong> Yes, it is step 4.  Frankly, I don&#8217;t really care what certification you get because none of them really wow me, but then again, I have a hard time justifying an undergraduate exercise science degree for $100, let alone $200,000.  If I was 18 today, I&#8217;d save all that money, get an internship, and spend the cash on loads of books/DVDs &#8211; and taking selective courses (gross anatomy, kinesiology and biomechanics). A lot of folks, for instance, have told Mike Robertson and I that they learned more practical information in our <a href="https://robertson.infusionsoft.com/go/BTEA/trigwu/" target="_blank"><strong>Building the Efficient Athlete DVD set</strong></a> than they did in their entire college careers &#8211; for only 0.0015% the price.</p>

<p>And, I sure as heck wouldn&#8217;t pay a university fo accept my internship credits; that&#8217;s one of the biggest scams of all time!  However, before I digress too much on that front, get the certification.  Most jobs will require it even if it is just a small foot in the door.</p>
<p><strong>5. Pay your dues.</strong> There is no way around it.  You aren&#8217;t magically going to have a full client roster on your first day of a job; you have to start somewhere.  I can promise you that you will be better off with the background you&#8217;ve created with steps 1-4.</p>
<p>In <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FOutliers-Story-Success-Malcolm-Gladwell%2Fdp%2F0316017922%3Fie%3DUTF8%26qid%3D1250274787%26sr%3D8-1&amp;tag=ericcresseyco-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325" target="_blank"><strong>Outliers</strong></a>, Malcolm Gladwell talks about the importance of accumulating 10,000 hours in order to become an expert in one&#8217;s field.  There are only 8,760 hours in a year &#8211; and even if you assume 60-hour work-weeks, it&#8217;s still going to take over three years to get to that 10,000-hour mark.</p>

<p>The 80% who don&#8217;t make it past the first year simply didn&#8217;t understand that you can&#8217;t live the life of an established professional, industry expert, or even someone who has seniority if you don&#8217;t put in the hours.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ve probably noticed that I geared a lot of this toward those in the private sector.  However, much of it will still apply to those looking to go into college strength and conditioning &#8211; but keep in mind that you will run into a lot of hurdles in college S&amp;C if you don&#8217;t have a college degree in a related field.  That&#8217;s just the game as it&#8217;s played, so keep it in mind.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Yesterday, the Division 1 North Baseball Semi-final here in MA between Lincoln-Sudbury (20-2) and Lawrence (20-2) got rained out &#8211; and postponed to today.  As many of you know, we deal with over 30 players from the LS high school baseball program, plus several in middle school and multiple graduates who are now playing college baseball.</p>
<p>With no game, local reports were left looking for something about which to write, so an interview with Coach Kirk Fredericks took place &#8211; and one of the topics that was brought up was the effect of strength and conditioning on the program.  Here&#8217;s an excerpt from <a href="http://www.metrowestdailynews.com/sports/local_sports/x1602635033/L-S-semifinal-postponed-to-today" target="_blank"><strong>the article</strong></a>:</p>
<p><em>Meanwhile, L-S has been on recent offensive tear, which includes putting up 10 and 16 runs in its first two tournament contests, respectively. </em></p>
<p><em>As a team, the Warriors have 25 home runs this season and 62 (14, 11, 12, 25) in their last four seasons. In Fredericks&#8217; first five seasons with the team, L-S combined for 19 (5, 1, 5, 2, 6) home runs.</em></p>
<p><em>&#8220;In the last four years, we&#8217;ve been working with Eric Cressey, our personal trainer, and he&#8217;s really made a difference,&#8221; said Fredericks. &#8220;We&#8217;ve also played at the same fields and the kids have been dedicated to getting stronger. The numbers don&#8217;t lie.&#8221;</em></p>

<p>I moved to Boston in 2006, so this is the fourth season I&#8217;ve gone through with the L-S guys &#8211; and while I knew power numbers had increased, I didn&#8217;t realize that they had virtually <strong>quadrupled</strong>.  I did, however, get my first hint of what was happening when we saw seven pitchers hit 80mph on the radar gun on the first day of tryouts this year.  This is a pretty big deal for any high school, and certainly one in Massachusetts that has to compete with nasty winter weather and the draw of lacrosse, track, tennis, golf, and volleyball during the spring season.  It&#8217;s also significant because the competition in the area has improved quite a bit; L-S actually faces many of the players from other schools that we train &#8211; and they&#8217;ve gone 85-10 since the start of the 2007 season (when they won the state championship).</p>
<p>Needless to say, it was pretty cool to be able to put some numbers with the trend we&#8217;d been observing.  And, it serves as a great reminder that &#8211; contrary to what a lot of &#8220;old school&#8221; coaches will try to tell you &#8211; a strength and conditioning program is absolutely essential for high school baseball players to not only perform at a higher level, but stay healthy in the process.  In this four-year period, LS baseball has had only one arm surgery, and it was in early 2008 on a player who had been misdiagnosed on ulnar nerve issues since middle school.  He&#8217;s now playing Division 1 baseball.  The guys understand that <a href="http://www.shoulderperformance.com" target="_blank"><strong>arm care</strong></a> is about more than just some foo-foo rotator cuff exercises.</p>
<p>This is what happens when the players in a program dedicate themselves to something and are consistent with it over the course of several years.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><em>Today&#8217;s guest blog comes from Brian Grasso.</em></p>
<p>The Youth Fitness and Sports Training explosion has happened.</p>
<p>More than $4 billion are pumped into the niches of personalized training and coaching for young people every year in the United States alone (<em>Wall Street Journal,</em> November 2004) and roughly 1 million kids and teens hired a Personal Trainer in 2006 (msnbc.com).</p>
<p>Given those stats and the enormity of both the problems (youth obesity and sports-related injuries) as well as the market size (see above) you&#8217;d think that we, as a profession, would have a relatively good working knowledge of how young people need to be trained and guided through a physical education process.</p>

<p>Unfortunately, this is as far from the truth as it gets.</p>
<p>I won&#8217;t bloviate or preach.</p>
<p>I won&#8217;t reveal my thoughts regarding how ineffectual we choose to be when working with this demographic.</p>
<p>And I certainly won&#8217;t use any sardonic overtones about the role of responsibility we should employ when opting to work with such a sensitive and cherished client base.</p>
<p>I will simply appeal to your sense of logic and intelligence.</p>
<p>For the purposes of this article, let me say this:</p>
<p>&#8220;Kids&#8221; is a term I will use to encompass everyone who inhabits the ages of 6 &#8211; 18.</p>
<p>Athletes and Non-Athletes alike.</p>
<p>Miniature superstars, bench-warmers and the overweight, will all be lumped under the same umbrella.</p>
<p>And simply stated, I do this because the development parameters of physical stimulus needed for ALL &#8220;kids&#8221; is the same &#8211; at very least in the beginning phases of training spectrum.</p>
<p>Training stimulus with this demographic is guided, primarily, by physiology.</p>
<p>You train to the organism, not the apparent needs of the young athlete or any potential concerns &#8211; for example, increasing the speed of an 8 year old running back or arm strength of a 10 year old pitcher would amount to &#8220;apparent needs&#8221; of a young athlete.  Attacking measures of calorie restriction and &#8220;fat loss&#8221; protocol would be examples of &#8220;potential concerns.&#8221;</p>
<p>Instead, your focus must be on the organism itself.</p>

<p>What a young organism needs to experience in the way of physical stimulus can largely be deduced by chronological age.  Certainly biological age (relative body maturation), emotional age (psychological maturation) and even personality (temperament) can all be factored into the equation, but I have found in my 13-year career that chronological age determents can be successfully applied in 90% of the cases.  The remaining 10% can be accounted for through proper coaching and identification.</p>
<p>Having said all that, the following is a brief rundown of the physical needs of &#8216;kids&#8217; based on chronological age:</p>
<p><span>6 &#8211; 9 Years Old</span>:</p>
<ul>
<li><span>Guided Discovery</span> &#8211; implying that Coaches and Trainers must create games and exercises that involve a variety of movement and guidelines in terms of execution, but allow the &#8216;kids&#8217; to explore on their own.  This phase is terribly critical for establishing &#8220;Athletic Intelligence&#8221; and sets the seeds for increased complexity of training in the future</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span>Outcome-Based Coaching</span> &#8211; Coaches and Trainers must restrict their commentary and praise to that of &#8220;outcome&#8221; oriented verbiage.  For example, when asking a 7 year old to pick up a medicine ball and throw it forward using a chest-pass motion, provide praise on that and that alone with respect to successful execution.  Comments pertaining to form are not required and can impede the natural development of &#8220;kids&#8221; with respect to establishing &#8220;Athletic Intelligence.&#8221;</li>
</ul>
<p><span>10 &#8211; 13 Years Old</span>:</p>
<ul>
<li><span>Learning Exploration</span> &#8211; Not dissimilar to Guided Discovery, &#8220;kids&#8221; must still be encouraged to discover what proper execution feels like on their own.  However, as emotional maturation increases (and while neural plasticity or adaptability is still high) it is also critical to start teaching the essence of primal patterns.  Educating &#8220;kids&#8221; on how to produce and resist force, create angles or accelerate/decelerate becomes an increasingly important part of the training process.</li>
</ul>
<p>This is a rough overview.  I admit it.</p>
<p>But learning exactly how to work with &#8220;kids&#8221; in a training environment is a process of education unto itself.</p>
<p>Just know this for starters:</p>
<p><strong>It&#8217;s not about Sets &amp; Reps</strong> &#8211; it&#8217;s about instructing technique through a developmental process.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s more, MUCH more I need to cover&#8230; And fortunately will be able to.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>My jazzercising and philosophizing mother has taught me a few things in life. Besides the proper way to work out to Madonna songs, she also instilled in me a thoughtfulness about life’s excesses. She’d often quote Cicero and say, “never go to excess, but let moderation be your guide.” Considering her smarty pants quotes, I guess that’s why I was a rather eccentric child that was health conscious but also super into eating chocolate chip cookies. Nevertheless, in the fit of many a cookie withdrawal, my soul was often comforted by the idea that at least my body would be healthy just so long as I limited the sweets. Therefore, it’s no wonder that being aware of excess has served me well as a personal trainer.</p>
<p>With excess and fitness in mind, consider your routines. Do you change things up every so often? In the case of the typical stranger I see at the gym, I too often see them working out month after month to the same routine, same machine, same intensity, same music, etc. Granted, not everyone has the same fitness goals (or even makes fitness goals); but, if your goal is to increase your performance (and not just relieve work stress or look strong), there are more efficient uses of your time.</p>
<p>In my personal training experience, I’ve observed that stressing your body in the same way, repeatedly, isn’t as effective as the practice of varying the stress over different exercises and different routines. Now, my evidence for varying workouts isn’t scientific, but I have observed this phenomenon first hand.</p>
<p>Case in point, a new fitness pupil of mine, Jacob, has been working out in the same gym as me for over a year. During this time, I watched him use the same machines, day in and day out, and even spoke with him about his performance increases. In a year’s time, he was able to increase his workload over 100% in a few specific exercises. However, while his performance gains were noticeable, he wasn’t satisfied with his return on time and energy spent. He wasn’t getting noticeably “stronger.”</p>
<p>As with any new pupil, I ran Jacob through a test workout to identify his performance thresholds and consulted with him on what goals he was interested in meeting. The test included various cardio, isometric, isotonic, and flexibility routines and Jacob let me know that he wanted to increase his total lifting strength and endurance (I guess he’s into moving furniture). During the test I noticed that he could indeed lift a fair amount of weight given his size but that his power over a certain range of motion didn’t translate into other lifting exercises. For example, he was great at the chest press but was unable to do pull-ups. He was all over the biceps machine but could barely do a shoulder shrug. Given these observations, Jacob had worked his routine to excess.</p>
<p>Fixing a person’s routine isn’t a problem. You just prescribe some new exercises and a new plan. However, if you’re currently working without a personal trainer, it can be difficult to be in-tune with how you’re progressing. Therefore, you need to keep my mom’s and Cicero’s rule in mind, “never go to excess!”</p>
