			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As a lot of you probably know, I&#8217;m pretty much known as a &#8220;baseball training guy&#8221; &#8211; and rightfully so, as about 80-85% of our athletes at <a href="http://cresseyperformance.com" target="_blank"><strong>Cressey Performance</strong></a> are baseball players.</p>
<p><a href="http://cresseyperformance.com"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5182" src="http://www.musclegaintruth.us/articles/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/bc88d_newcp21-300x129.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="129" /></a></p>
<p>Most people are surprised to find that I really never played baseball at a high level.  While I was super active in it growing up (my mother jokes that I actually taught myself to read with baseball cards), I actually had to give baseball up at the end of eighth grade so that I could focus on tennis, my &#8220;stronger&#8221; spring sport.  And, to take it a step further, when high school ended, I went off to college in 1999 fully expecting to become an accountant.  Seriously.</p>

<p>Around that same time, though, I had some health problems &#8211; and my shoulder was already a wreck from tennis.  Those factors &#8220;beckoned&#8221; me to a healthy lifestyle &#8211; and that&#8217;s when I made the decision to transfer to an exercise science program and focus on my new passion as a career.  I did a double major in exercise science and sports/fitness management, and took part in internships in everything from personal training to cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation.</p>
<p>When I headed off to graduate school in 2003, I anticipated going in to the research world.  About a month after I arrived on campus at UCONN, though, I caught the strength and conditioning bug and was hooked &#8211; for life.  Interestingly, though, in those first few years, I really didn&#8217;t work with baseball much at all.</p>
<p>It wasn&#8217;t until I got out in to the &#8220;real world&#8221; that I just happened to start working with a few high school baseball players when I first moved to Boston.  They were great kids, and I had a lot of fun training them &#8211; and they got great results that drew a lot of attention to the work I did with them.  I was already a big baseball fan, and given my history of shoulder problems, I really enjoyed learning everything I possibly could about arm care &#8211; so it was a great fit.</p>

<p>The rest, as they say, is history.  We now have 44 professional baseball players from all over the country here to train with us at Cressey Performance because they believe our expertise, environment, systems, and passion give them the best opportunity on the planet to be successful in their baseball careers. I have guys who swear by my resistance training, medicine ball, <a href="https://robertson.infusionsoft.com/go/A&amp;C/trigwu/" target="_blank"><strong>mobility</strong></a>, soft tissue, movement training, and <a href="http://ericcressey.com/weighted-baseballs-safe-and-effective-or-stupid-and-dangerous" target="_blank"><strong>throwing programs</strong></a> even though I never even played a single game of high school &#8211; let alone collegiate or professional &#8211; baseball. <em><strong> I&#8217;ve found my niche &#8211; but as you can tell, I never forced it.</strong></em></p>
<p>What do you think I would have said if you had asked me in 1999 what my ten-year plan was?  I would have told you that I&#8217;d be filing tax returns in early April, not following all our athletes on opening day around the country.</p>
<p>And, if you had asked me in 2004 what my five-year plan was, I&#8217;d have told you that it was to become a great muscle physiology research.  I probably would have commented on how cool it was that the Red Sox won the World Series for the first time in 86 years &#8211; but wouldn&#8217;t have had the foresight to note that I&#8217;d someday go on to train two guys from that roster who have 2004 world championship rings.</p>
<p>My point is that <em><strong>you can&#8217;t force a fitness niche; you have to discover and then develop it</strong></em>.  A lot of stars had to line up the right way for me to get to where I am with working with a baseball population, but as Thomas Jefferson once said, &#8220;I find that the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have.&#8221;</p>

<p>Getting sick forced me to learn how to better take care of my body &#8211; and that led me to the fitness industry and strength and conditioning.</p>
<p>Having shoulder pain motivated me to learn more about shoulder health.</p>
<p>Being a &#8220;non-baseball guy&#8221; growing up forced me to do a lot more listening than talking with our athletes early-on, as I had to learn their culture.  It also put me in a position to never accept stupid training principles (like <a href="http://ericcressey.com/a-new-model-for-training-between-starts-part-1" target="_blank"><strong>distance running for pitchers</strong></a>) simply because they were &#8220;tradition&#8221; &#8211; because crappy training was never a &#8220;tradition&#8221; that I&#8217;d learned.</p>
<p>If I&#8217;d purposely gotten sick, whacked myself in the shoulder with a sledgehammer, and then read every book on baseball tradition that I could, do you think I&#8217;d be where I am today?  If you answered &#8220;yes,&#8221; put down the glue you&#8217;re sniffing and start reading this again from the top.</p>

<p>Every business consultant in the fitness industry raves about how important it is nowadays to get a niche.  Train middle-aged female fat loss clients only.  Or, maybe it&#8217;s 9-12 year-old kids.  My buddy <a href="http://www.autismfitness.com/" target="_blank"><strong>Eric Chessen</strong></a> even works exclusively with fitness for kids in the autism spectrum. I agree completely with these consultants&#8217; advice &#8211; but your appropriate niche won&#8217;t magically appear unless you experience a lot of different settings and find the right fit for you, then follow up on it by educating yourself as much as possible by reading/watching everything you can, expanding your network of colleagues, and finding solutions to problems others haven&#8217;t been able to solve.</p>
<p>If you are going to do something exclusively, you better be:</p>
<p>a) passionate about it</p>
<p>b) good at it</p>
<p>c) sure that it alone can financially support you</p>
<p>d) excited about the possibility of becoming an expert and contributing to the existing body of knowledge in that realm</p>
<p>e) willing to potentially pass up on opportunities in other realms</p>
<p>To be very candid, I just don&#8217;t think that having specific 5- and 10-year plans is necessarily a good idea.  Sure, it&#8217;s okay if we are talking about financial planning, marriage, etc. &#8211; but when it comes to professional goals, there are just too many factors that can change things on a dime and turn you in a new direction.  I love what I do now, but couldn&#8217;t tell you for the life of me where I&#8217;ll be in 5-10 years &#8211; and I happen to think that I have a pretty good grasp on where I&#8217;m going, as compared to the rest of the fitness industry.  If I was just leaving college today, I&#8217;d definitely be taking it one day at a time!</p>

<p>&#8220;My current job just isn&#8217;t fulfilling, but I really love fitness and want to turn it into a career.  What certification do you recommend?&#8221;</p>
<p>I get these type of inquiries so often that I decided that this bit of writing would be my autoresponse which &#8211; as you&#8217;ll see below &#8211; has a bit of tough love that I think these folks need to hear.</p>
<p>A few months ago, Rachel Cosgrove said that about 80% of those who enter the fitness industry leave it within a year.  I haven&#8217;t seen the statistic myself, but Rachel knows her stuff and meticulously monitors the business side of the fitness industry and I defer to her completely.</p>
<p>Does it say something about the &#8220;status quo&#8221; that our industry probably has more turnover than this position at your local zoo?</p>

<p>Why the crazy turnover within the first year?  Well, for starters, I feel like entering the fitness business is an impulse decision for a lot of folks.  They hate their current jobs so much that they have to go to the opposite end of the spectrum to one of the only things in their lives that makes them happy: exercising.</p>
<p>Two months later, they realize that they&#8217;re working 60-hour weeks on their feet because they have floor hours at their local commercial gym in the middle of the day on top of their only two personal training clients &#8211; who conveniently schedule at 5AM and 6PM.  They&#8217;re rewarded with a whopping $600 check every two weeks, after taxes.  Starting with the 2011 tax plan, it&#8217;ll probably be $200; take notes, kids.</p>
<p>But you&#8217;ve got passion, right?</p>
<p>Wrong.</p>
<p>Passion (and optimism) might get you out of bed for that 5AM client, but only determination, preparation, intrapersonal skills, organization, and a solid understanding of exercise physiology are going to make it possible for you to get through the rest of the day while being happy and making sure that you&#8217;re just a little bit better the next day.</p>
<p>And, I will tell you flat-out that every single trainer I have ever met has had days when exercise was the last thing they wanted to do.  For me, it happened in the fall of 2006 every Tuesday and Thursday night &#8211; when my football guys came in to train with me at 7:30PM after I&#8217;d been training clients since 6:30AM.  Were it not for this kind of energy in my training partners, I probably would have gone home and just gone to bed.</p>
</p>
<p>Obviously, that&#8217;s a worst-case scenario.  However, I&#8217;m never going to discourage someone from pursuing what they feel could be a livelihood where they&#8217;d be happy and helping people.  I would, though, encourage them to adhere to the following steps (in this order):</p>
<p><strong>1. Go observe a few current fitness professionals who are successful in their crafts.</strong> Ask questions and get a feel for whether this is a good fit for you before you jump into the deep-end, quitting your job and investing all sorts of cash in a career change.</p>
<p><strong>2. Wait a year to get a certification. </strong> What?  Huh?  This is supposed to come first, right?  Wrong.  Getting a certification without any background experience makes you a liability, not a professional.  Every penny you spend in that first year should be on books, DVDs, seminars, and travel to go observe other coaches/trainers in action.  And, you should be taking advantage of all the free resources there are for you to get educated online.  Don&#8217;t ignore fitness industry business resources, either; they aren&#8217;t taught with certifications or degrees, but are tremendously important.</p>
<p><strong>3. Get an internship. </strong> This is an extension of #1 &#8211; and it still comes before getting a certification.  You need to log at least three months of 40-hour weeks somewhere learning your craft and paying your dues.  Get a feel for whether you could see yourself doing this long-term.</p>
<p>Obviously, this is a concern because it would require you to quit your job, so you&#8217;d need to save up for this period.  However, you would be amazed at how many interns are hired by facilities after their internship period is over (all our &#8220;hires&#8221; at Cressey Performance have been former interns).  And, most facilities will pay for your certification and CPR/AED training, and some will even give you a continuing education stipends on top of it.</p>
<p><strong>4. Get a certification.</strong> Yes, it is step 4.  Frankly, I don&#8217;t really care what certification you get because none of them really wow me, but then again, I have a hard time justifying an undergraduate exercise science degree for $100, let alone $200,000.  If I was 18 today, I&#8217;d save all that money, get an internship, and spend the cash on loads of books/DVDs &#8211; and taking selective courses (gross anatomy, kinesiology and biomechanics). A lot of folks, for instance, have told Mike Robertson and I that they learned more practical information in our <a href="https://robertson.infusionsoft.com/go/BTEA/trigwu/" target="_blank"><strong>Building the Efficient Athlete DVD set</strong></a> than they did in their entire college careers &#8211; for only 0.0015% the price.</p>

<p>And, I sure as heck wouldn&#8217;t pay a university fo accept my internship credits; that&#8217;s one of the biggest scams of all time!  However, before I digress too much on that front, get the certification.  Most jobs will require it even if it is just a small foot in the door.</p>
<p><strong>5. Pay your dues.</strong> There is no way around it.  You aren&#8217;t magically going to have a full client roster on your first day of a job; you have to start somewhere.  I can promise you that you will be better off with the background you&#8217;ve created with steps 1-4.</p>
<p>In <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FOutliers-Story-Success-Malcolm-Gladwell%2Fdp%2F0316017922%3Fie%3DUTF8%26qid%3D1250274787%26sr%3D8-1&amp;tag=ericcresseyco-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325" target="_blank"><strong>Outliers</strong></a>, Malcolm Gladwell talks about the importance of accumulating 10,000 hours in order to become an expert in one&#8217;s field.  There are only 8,760 hours in a year &#8211; and even if you assume 60-hour work-weeks, it&#8217;s still going to take over three years to get to that 10,000-hour mark.</p>

<p>The 80% who don&#8217;t make it past the first year simply didn&#8217;t understand that you can&#8217;t live the life of an established professional, industry expert, or even someone who has seniority if you don&#8217;t put in the hours.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ve probably noticed that I geared a lot of this toward those in the private sector.  However, much of it will still apply to those looking to go into college strength and conditioning &#8211; but keep in mind that you will run into a lot of hurdles in college S&amp;C if you don&#8217;t have a college degree in a related field.  That&#8217;s just the game as it&#8217;s played, so keep it in mind.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>With the boom of semi-private training in recent years, there has also been a boom of questions from fitness professionals on how on Earth it is logistically possible to train several people when they may all come from different backgrounds and have different needs.  Back in 2006, I was one of those people &#8211; so I can certainly speak from perspective.</p>
<p>I did almost all one-on-one personal training for about a year from the summer of &#8216;05 to the summer of &#8216;06, when I moved to Boston and went out on my own as an independent contractor.  When I arrived in Boston, all these questions on how to make it work in the semi-private model were rattling around my head.  Admittedly, I entered this model cautiously, doing 50/50 private and semi-private training as I got my feet wet with it.</p>

<p>Many of the valuable lessons an up and coming Strength &amp; Conditioning Coach learns do not fall under the guides of content knowledge (coaching, program design, etc.). On the contrary, many educational moments manifest in a social sense (interpersonal skills). During my <a href="http://www.cresseyperformance.com/">Cressey Performance</a> internship, this semester I&#8217;ve come to appreciate even more so how a coach&#8217;s success in the private sector of the profession (training facilities) is largely contingent upon the one&#8217;s ability to interact with people in a respectful yet confident and authoritative manner.</p>
<p>More specifically, &#8220;no one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.&#8221;  To this I would add, &#8220;no one cares how much you know <em>and what results your program can give</em> <em>them,</em> until they know how much you care <em>about satisfying their personal needs</em>.&#8221; In other words, through trial and error I&#8217;ve learned that a client or athlete really has more interest in-whether they know or admit it-how you make them feel as a person as opposed to how well-written and effective your program is. While this may be true in the collegiate setting, I find this truism has a larger bearing on a coach&#8217;s success in the private sector.</p>
<p>This principle is discussed in the book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FPeak-Companies-Maslow-non-Franchise-Leadership%2Fdp%2F0787988618%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dbooks%26qid%3D1262005087%26sr%3D1-1&amp;tag=ericcresseyco-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325" target="_blank"><strong><em>Peak</em></strong></a>, by Chip Conley. He describes &#8220;The Customer Pyramid,&#8221; which is a derivative of Maslow&#8217;s Hierarchy of Needs. He articulates how, in business, if you do not satisfy the base level needs of your clientele, they will never have the &#8220;peak experience&#8221; that you wish for them to have.</p>

<p>When we apply this concept to our field, S&amp;C and personal training, there are a few implications worth noting, starting with the first level and moving upward. First, clients coming through our doors <em>expect</em> to feel valued as people. They <em>expect</em> to be important to you and your business. When you treat people appropriately, it fosters satisfaction from the clients towards your business. This should only be the beginning of a customer&#8217;s experience at your training facility because if it ended here then your business would never reach its highest potential.  This area is where we need to spend the most time investing in the customers&#8217; experience. Most importantly, we need to realize this step forms the foundation of our customers&#8217; experience, or, the base level of the pyramid. If you noticed in the depiction above the &#8220;Meets Expectations&#8221; category is the largest of the three. The bigger the base of our customer pyramid then the bigger the subsequent categories will be.</p>
<p>We need to then aim to meet our customers&#8217; <em>desires</em> as well. It&#8217;s pretty intuitive that a personal training client or athlete who is paying for your services actually desires results. But what&#8217;s not so obvious I think is that because of the lack of true results in our profession, mainly from the stain of commercial gyms, our potential clients have put actual program &#8220;results&#8221; in the <em>desires</em> category instead of keeping it in the <em>expectations </em>category. Believe it or not, an athlete may have signed up to train with you who previously trained elsewhere and left the experience with absolutely no, or barely any, improvements in strength, power, speed, body composition, etc., (aka results). Therefore, clients of today &#8211; be it a soccer mom just looking for fat loss or an athlete trying to make the varsity team at school &#8211; may have lowered their standards for what they consider &#8220;results.&#8221; If you can (and you should be able to)  give results to your clients, then they will be committed to you and your business because they know their money is well spent  and they&#8217;re actually getting the results they <em>desired</em> when they signed up for training.</p>

<p>Now comes the final level: the &#8220;peak experience&#8221; we all would like our clients and athletes to have. If you&#8217;re a business owner, you&#8217;d like to be able to guarantee each and every person who walks through your doors reaches this level. Unfortunately, the fact of the matter is that we really can&#8217;t guarantee it. All we can do is keep buffering the base and middle level of the customer pyramid and the &#8220;needs&#8221; will take care of themselves. So, what exactly is the &#8220;peak experience&#8221; and what unrecognized needs does it meet?</p>
<p>Honestly, we can&#8217;t define it. All we can do is describe it. It&#8217;s almost a surreal experience, one they didn&#8217;t realize they would have before they came to your facility.  It&#8217;s one that leaves each client evangelizing others and bringing in more customers better than any marketing plan ever could. It&#8217;s to the point that a person can&#8217;t even begin to think about training elsewhere because they &#8220;just HAVE to train at (your place).&#8221; It&#8217;s that unique feeling someone gets when they walk through the door of your facility because they know what&#8217;s about to transpire, and it&#8217;s the feeling they leave with afterward. Some young athletes can have such a euphoric experience that they can&#8217;t even fathom using equipment brands other than what you house at your facility. While that&#8217;s an extreme case, it&#8217;s a reality in some places and all goes under the &#8220;peak experience&#8221; category the folks at CP have worked to cultivate. The peak experience is best described as the culmination of environment and atmosphere CP provides its customers. It includes the interaction of staff members, interns, other customers, facility equipments, sights, sounds, etc. All these variables added together can help us describe that peak experience.</p>

<p>Here I want to make myself vulnerable to the readers. Being young and eager to learn I&#8217;ve found it can be easy sometimes to get caught up in the scientific and technical side of things and effectively skip past the base level needs of some of the clients with whom I was working. Mistakenly, I wanted clients to have all their unrecognized needs met right away and right now! There were also times where I jumped right to coaching someone without taking the time to build a relationship with them first. While this might in some collegiate settings be acceptable, it does not yield a good outcome in the private sector. In fact, I would go as far as to say that as a college student this is the biggest mistake I&#8217;ve made in my learning process. There have been specific instances where an athlete simply did not like me because the very first day we met I was trying to coach him/her instead of trying to establish rapport first AND THEN coach him/her. Remember &#8211; &#8220;no one cares how much you know and what results your program can give them, until they know how much you care about satisfying their personal needs.&#8221; Essentially I was skipping past this client&#8217;s base level of needs to trying to cultivate higher lever needs first.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m open and honest about my experiences for a couple reasons:</p>
<p>1.  I&#8217;ve always appreciated when those who have gone before me were candid about their mistakes so that young up-and-comers like me could learn from them.</p>
<p>2.  I think too many people subconsciously believe that just because someone is an internet author, they do everything right. You&#8217;d be surprised! Whether it&#8217;s a big name in the profession or one of their interns everyone has made both big and small mistakes in their career. Some were easily recovered from while others might have even been so extreme that the outcomes were career ending.</p>
<p>At any rate, we should all strive to learn from our own mistakes and that of others and be diligent to make a permanent change that will prevent us from screwing up again.</p>
<p>Make sure we are investing most of our efforts satisfying base level needs of our clients before getting them up to higher levels.</p>

Besides the proper way to work out to Madonna songs, she also instilled in me a thoughtfulness about life’s excesses. She’d often quote Cicero and say, “never go to excess, but let moderation be your guide.” Considering her smarty pants quotes, I guess that’s why I was a rather eccentric child that was health conscious but also super into eating chocolate chip cookies. Nevertheless, in the fit of many a cookie withdrawal, my soul was often comforted by the idea that at least my body would be healthy just so long as I limited the sweets. Therefore, it’s no wonder that being aware of excess has served me well as a personal trainer.</p>
<p>With excess and fitness in mind, consider your routines. Do you change things up every so often? In the case of the typical stranger I see at the gym, I too often see them working out month after month to the same routine, same machine, same intensity, same music, etc. Granted, not everyone has the same fitness goals (or even makes fitness goals); but, if your goal is to increase your performance (and not just relieve work stress or look strong), there are more efficient uses of your time.</p>
<p>In my personal training experience, I’ve observed that stressing your body in the same way, repeatedly, isn’t as effective as the practice of varying the stress over different exercises and different routines. Now, my evidence for varying workouts isn’t scientific, but I have observed this phenomenon first hand.</p>
<p>Case in point, a new fitness pupil of mine, Jacob, has been working out in the same gym as me for over a year. During this time, I watched him use the same machines, day in and day out, and even spoke with him about his performance increases. In a year’s time, he was able to increase his workload over 100% in a few specific exercises. However, while his performance gains were noticeable, he wasn’t satisfied with his return on time and energy spent. He wasn’t getting noticeably “stronger.”</p>
<p>As with any new pupil, I ran Jacob through a test workout to identify his performance thresholds and consulted with him on what goals he was interested in meeting. The test included various cardio, isometric, isotonic, and flexibility routines and Jacob let me know that he wanted to increase his total lifting strength and endurance (I guess he’s into moving furniture). During the test I noticed that he could indeed lift a fair amount of weight given his size but that his power over a certain range of motion didn’t translate into other lifting exercises. For example, he was great at the chest press but was unable to do pull-ups. He was all over the biceps machine but could barely do a shoulder shrug. Given these observations, Jacob had worked his routine to excess.</p>
<p>Fixing a person’s routine isn’t a problem. You just prescribe some new exercises and a new plan. However, if you’re currently working without a personal trainer, it can be difficult to be in-tune with how you’re progressing. Therefore, you need to keep my mom’s and Cicero’s rule in mind, “never go to excess!”</p>
